University of the Sunshine Coast
DEVELOPER: University of the Sunshine Coast
CERTIFICATION: Ecosystems, Waste, Energy, Materials, Water, Community
The University of the Sunshine Coast is currently the fastest growing university in the nation with enrolments increasing by approximately 24 percent each year. Since its establishment in 1994, the University has produced 8,000 graduates and provides a significant contribution to the economic, social, cultural and environmental profile of the region.
Nestled against the sensitive estuarine environment of Mooloolah National Park, USC made a commitment to protect and enhance the natural environment right from inception, and is now the first Australian University campus to be fully certified under a green rating.
EnviroDevelopment certification for USC recognises a wide range of initiatives implemented on the campus, including water sensitive urban design features that protect the water quality of the adjacent National Park, a stormwater harvesting system that minimizes potable water use and nutrient discharge, design and orientation of buildings to provide comfortable indoor environments with minimum use of artificial climate control, and a suite of waste management actions.
