CATEGORY: Mixed Use
CERTIFICATION: Ecosystems, Water, Community
Port Coogee is the first mixed use project to achieve certification in Western Australia. The Australand development is an 86 hectare marina centred coastal development along WA’s Cockburn Sound, 23 km south-west of Perth CBD, with a residential community created around a mixed-use waterfront.
Port Coogee will ultimately consist of more than 800 residential lots, approximately 1100 apartments, a 300 pen marina recreational and entertainment facilities as well as a retail and commercial precinct of approximately 12,000sqm and a 300 pen marina with an accessible local beach.
The historically contaminated site has become one of the largest urban brownfield remediation projects in Australia. The planning and remedial works have transformed the site and led to Port Coogee being awarded the development industry’s top accolade.
The development achieves significant reductions in water consumption through water efficiency mechanisms and the third pipe system delivers treated groundwater to all lots and public open space for irrigation purposes.
The local community and visitors have been well considered in Port Coogee. The public realm is developing into an inspiring place where the community can connect with the surrounding environment and built form. Public art reflecting the local history, a purpose-built wheelchair accessible jetty and community play areas are examples of how this connection is fostered.
Community prosperity has also been considered with economic, employment and tourism aspects being an intrinsic component of this mixed use development.
